Google Search by Date: How to Use before: and after:

In the last lesson, the most important question before you use any number was: "when?".

And that question isn't only for reports.

If you're looking for the "best manual coffee grinder", an article from 2019 will tell you about models that don't exist anymore. And if you're following a competitor, you want to know what they wrote this month, not 5 years ago.

Google has two operators for dates: after: and before:.

after: from this date on

Read it as: "pages with grinder, dated January 1, 2025 or later".

The Timemore C3 review from 2024 is gone. That's expected.

But look at the Amazon page. It's gone too, even though it isn't old.

Why?

Because product pages usually have no clear date. And when Google doesn't know a page's date, it can't say it's after 2025. So it might not show up.

before: before this date

The same idea in reverse. Only the 2024 review is left.

Both together: a set period

Now you've limited the results to the year 2025 only.

How to write the date

The order is always: the year, then the month, then the day.

Here the date is in the order a lot of us write it every day, day first. Google won't understand it.

Another mistake: two dates that don't fit together

After 2026 and before 2025 at the same time? There's no page like that.

What date is this, exactly?

That's an important question, and the answer isn't always clear.

The date here is the date Google estimated for the page. Usually the publication date or the last update written on the page itself.

That means an old article where someone changed one line, and updated its date, can show up as if it were new.

So open the page and check the date yourself, especially if you're going to base a decision on it.

How they differ from Google's "Tools"

Under the search box on Google there's a "Tools" button. Click it, and you'll find an "Any time" list with: past hour, past 24 hours, past week, past month, past year.

That list counts the period from today. "Past year" today isn't the same as "past year" two months from now.

after: and before:, on the other hand, are fixed dates. If you save the query and come back to it in a year, it brings up the same period.

The list is faster if you want "what's new as of now". The operators are more accurate if you want one particular period. And in the last lesson we'll see that the choices in that list are written into the search link itself.

An SEO example: what has your competitor published lately?

This query shows you everything your competitor has published since the start of the year:

Run it every month, and change the date. You'll know what they're focusing on, and how often they publish.

And if you want to see who has written recent "best grinder" articles, so you know which models people are talking about now:

Exercise 1

The practical test

A thinking test

You typed manual coffee grinder after:2026 and found very few results, all of them articles. Not a single product page.

Does that mean there are no new products?

No. It means product pages don't have a date Google knows, so the operator left them out. Dates are useful for articles, news and reports. Look for products without a date.

Before the next lesson

• after:2025-01-01 from this date on.
• before:2025-01-01 before this date.
• The date in order: year, month, day.
• Pages without a date usually disappear.

Now you have every operator you'll need in your work. In the next lesson we won't learn a new one. We'll put everything so far into ready-made recipes for real SEO tasks: checking indexing, competitor content, link opportunities and brand mentions.
